Context

Conditions that change the method

  • Food contact — Use only food-grade mineral oil on refrigerator and dishwasher handles.

What you need

  • Mild dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Two clean microfiber cloths
  • Food-grade mineral oil (or baby oil)
  1. Look closely at the appliance surface to identify the direction of the brushed grain (usually horizontal or vertical).
  2. Dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and 1–2 drops of dish soap, wringing out excess moisture.
  3. Wipe the surface firmly along the grain lines to lift skin sebum and grease without trapping soil in microscopic ridges.
  4. Immediately dry the panel with a clean dry microfiber cloth to prevent tap water mineral spots.
  5. Place 2 drops of mineral oil onto a dry microfiber cloth section.
  6. Buff the metal evenly in long strokes matching the grain. The micro-layer repels future fingerprint oils and restores deep metallic luster.

What to avoid

  • Never wipe in circular motions or across the grain — this highlights micro-scratches.
  • Never use bleach, ammonia glass cleaners, or abrasive scouring pastes on stainless doors.
  • Do not over-apply mineral oil; 2–3 drops is plenty for an entire refrigerator door.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I use olive oil or vegetable oil instead of mineral oil on stainless steel?
No. Plant and vegetable oils go rancid over time, developing sticky yellow residues and an unpleasant smell. Mineral oil is stable, non-drying, and will not spoil.
Is this method safe for 'black stainless steel' appliances?
Black stainless steel is a transparent tinted polymer coating over steel. Clean it very gently with warm soapy water only — never use oils, polishes, or scrapers which can peel the color coating.
