What you are trying to remove
Problems are the other half of a cleaning task. A guide exists only when a problem is real for a specific target.
- Coffee stainA tannin stain from coffee or tea. Heat and time set it in fabric; on hard surfaces it is a film, not a dye in the fiber.
- Cooking greaseSpattered or spilled cooking fat that has not yet baked into a hard film. It smears on stainless and cloth; a degreaser that is safe on a sink can be wrong on a wood floor.
- Hard water buildupWhite, cloudy, or chalky mineral deposits left when hard water dries. Often called limescale or water spots.
- MildewA surface growth common in showers, grout, and washer gaskets. It often wipes or treats as a film; growth that has gone into grout or fabric is a harder job.
- Pet urineUrine that has soaked into carpet, padding, or fabric. The stain and the odor are the same job; covering the smell without breaking down the urine usually brings it back.
- Burnt greaseCooking fat that has heated into a brown or black film. It no longer wipes like fresh grease; scraping or the wrong oven chemistry can damage the surface underneath.
- Red wine stainA tannin-and-pigment stain from red wine. It spreads fast in cloth and can set with heat; blotting while wet is a different job from a dried ring.
- Soap scumA dull film from soap, body oils, and minerals. It clings to shower glass and fixtures and will not wipe off with water alone.
- Body oilSkin oils left on fabric, bedding, or shower surfaces. Combined with minerals they help form soap scum; in cloth they oxidize into yellow residue.
- Food odorLingering food smells in a fridge, microwave, or fabric. The source is often a spill in a seal or a porous liner, not the air itself.
- Tomato sauce stainA pigment-and-oil stain from tomato sauce or ketchup. The red color and the oil need different steps; heat can set the dye in fabric.
- Chocolate stainA mix of fat, sugar, and cocoa pigment. The grease and the color come out on different passes; hot water can set the stain in fabric.
- Blood stainA protein stain. Hot water and heat can cook it into fabric; fresh blood and a dried, darkened spot are not the same starting point.
- Sweat stainSalt, body oil, and deodorant residue, often yellow in underarms. The mix can bond with fabric finish; bleach on some synthetics makes the yellow worse.
- Ink stainDye from pens or markers. Solvent, water-based, and permanent inks do not lift the same way; rubbing can drive the dye deeper into the fiber.
- StainsColor or residue left in a material after a spill. Fiber, dye, and whether the stain is protein, tannin, oil, or pigment change the method — one remover does not cover every stain.
- Grease and oilFats and oils that smear, polymerize, or soak in. Fresh cooking grease, burnt grease, and body oil do not respond to the same cleaner or dwell time.
- OdorsSmells that remain after the visible mess is gone. Urine, smoke, and food odors sit in different materials and do not all yield to the same deodorizer.
- Mold and mildewVisible fungal growth in damp places. Surface mildew and growth in porous material are different jobs; this site describes cleaning, not medical or disinfection claims.
- FingerprintsSkin oil left as prints on stainless, glass, or glossy appliance doors. They reappear as soon as the surface is touched; the wipe direction on brushed metal changes whether streaks show.
- Burnt-on foodFood that has cooked onto a surface — sugar, cheese, sauce — rather than a grease film alone. Burnt sugar on a glass cooktop is a different risk than spatters on a microwave wall.
- RustIron oxide stains from water, cans, or metal sitting on a surface. Acid treatments that lift rust can etch stone or damage finishes; the stain and the rusting object are separate problems.
- Adhesive residueTacky leftover from stickers, tape, or glue. Solvents that lift adhesive can haze plastic or strip a finish; scraping can scratch glass and stainless.
