How to Remove Coffee Stains from Cotton Clothes
Blot excess coffee immediately, flush from the back with cold water, pre-treat with a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water plus a drop of liquid detergent, let sit 15 minutes, and wash normally.
Context
Conditions that change the method
- Color-sensitive — For dyed cotton garments, check care labels before applying acidic vinegar solutions.
Do not mix vinegar with chlorine bleach
If you plan to use chlorine bleach in the laundry machine, ensure all vinegar pre-treatment is completely rinsed out of the fabric first. If detergents splash into eyes, flush immediately with cool water.
What you need
- Cold and warm water
- Distilled white vinegar
- Liquid laundry detergent or liquid dish soap
- Clean paper towels or white microfiber cloths
- Blot fresh coffee spills immediately with a clean paper towel. Press firmly without rubbing to prevent spreading liquid deeper into adjacent threads.
- Hold the underside of the fabric directly beneath cold running water to force the brown tannins out the way they entered.
- Mix 1 tablespoon of distilled white vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid detergent, and 1 quart of warm water in a small basin.
- Submerge the stained portion of the garment and let it soak for 15 minutes.
- Rub the fabric gently between your fingers to release remaining tannin rings, then rinse with warm water.
- Launder the garment in the warmest water safe for the fabric's care label. Air-dry and inspect to verify the stain is gone.
What to avoid
- Do not use bar soap on fresh coffee — natural bar soaps contain sodium tallowate which reacts with tannins and can set the brown stain.
- Never machine-dry a garment while a faint brown shadow is still visible.
- Avoid aggressive scrubbing that creates permanent fuzzy friction patches on cotton.
Products
What to use
- Liquid laundry detergentStandard liquid surfactant detergent used as a spot pre-treater to penetrate fabric weave and lift oily binders and tannin dyes.
- Distilled white vinegarA mild acid useful for mineral deposits and some soap films on glass and other acid-safe surfaces. Never mix it with bleach or ammonia. It is a method, not a disinfectant claim.
- Dish soapA mild alkaline soap that cuts grease and soap film. Dilute it in warm water. It is a cleaner, not a disinfectant claim, and it is not a substitute for a product labeled for grout mineral deposits.

FAQ
Questions people ask
- Does cleaning method change if the coffee had cream and sugar in it?
- Yes. Milk and cream add dairy fat proteins, and sugar can caramelize. Adding a drop of grease-cutting liquid dish soap alongside vinegar ensures both dairy oils and dark tannins are lifted.
- Can I remove a coffee stain that was already washed and machine-dried?
- Heat-set coffee is difficult because dryer heat bakes the tannins into cotton. Soak the spot in warm water and oxygen bleach powder for 4–6 hours to slowly lift oxidized pigment.
