How to Remove Food Odors from a Dishwasher

Unlock and scrub the bottom drain filter with dish soap and warm water, place a cup of distilled white vinegar on the top rack for a hot empty cycle to dissolve grease, then run a second short cycle with 1 cup of baking soda dusted over the tub floor.

Context

Conditions that change the method

  • Food contact — Rinse completely before washing plates and utensils.

What you need

  • Mild dish soap and a soft nylon brush
  • Distilled white vinegar (2 cups)
  • Baking soda (1 cup)
  • A clean toothpick (for spray arm nozzles)
  • Microfiber cleaning cloth
  1. Pull out the bottom dishrack to expose the drain sump at the bottom of the tub.
  2. Turn the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift it out along with the flat mesh plate.
  3. Scrub the slimy filter mesh under warm running tap water with dish soap and a soft nylon brush, removing trapped bones, grease, and rotting food particles.
  4. Inspect the upper and lower spray arms. Use a toothpick to poke out mineral crust or lemon seeds clogging nozzle jets, then reinstall the filter.
  5. Place a dishwasher-safe cup filled with 2 cups of distilled white vinegar upright on the top rack. Run the hottest normal wash cycle without detergent to break down grease films.
  6. After the vinegar cycle finishes, sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda across the bottom tub floor and run a short, hot cycle to absorb remaining odors and freshen the interior.

What to avoid

  • Never mix vinegar and baking soda into the same cycle — they foam over and cancel out each other's cleaning power.
  • Do not use foaming dish soap in an active dishwasher cycle (it creates massive bubble leaks on kitchen floors).
  • Avoid ignoring the bottom door seal gasket where food splatters collect underneath.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What causes standing dirty water at the bottom of the dishwasher?
A clogged filter, obstructed garbage disposal knockout plug, or kinked drain hose creates a high-water loop failure. Clean the filter first and check your sink disposal connection.
How often should I clean the cylindrical dishwasher filter?
If you scrape plates before loading, cleaning the filter once every month is sufficient. If you load dishes with heavy food residue, rinse the filter weekly.
